Susanne Elisabeth Schmitt

Statement

Susanne Schmitt combines trivial objects, found objects, and materials with her own craftsmanlike precision. The result is surprising, aesthetic structures of great poetry and restrained wit.
A special quality of her creations is based on their spatial ambiguity. Applied flat to the wall, they function two-dimensionally, as striking, pictorial signs. Detached from the wall, they "unfold" into exciting hat sculptures of cubist or constructivist appeal.
Susanne Schmitt uses the design principle of these very special inventions undoctrinally and with great playful light-footedness.
The scope of her ideas seems limitless. At the same time, the individual objects remain exciting even in their sequence.
In each of her objects it becomes clear that although they belong to the category of "hat", they have nothing to do with fashion. They are objects of art, sometimes picture, sometimes sculpture, sometimes graphic sign.
